Merpati: A Handwritten Script Font for Modern Web Design

Merpati in a Creative Portfolio Website Header

I was working on a creative portfolio site for a freelance designer when I stumbled upon Merpati. As a handwritten script font by Jhoen Studios, it immediately caught my eye with its organic feel and elegant swashes. I wanted something that felt personal yet professional, and Merpati fit perfectly as the main heading for the hero section.

Testing it out over a full-bleed background image of a sketchbook, the font looked stunning. The PUA encoded alternates allowed me to customize certain letters for a more dynamic look, which helped elevate the overall design. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; readability was key too. On mobile, I made sure to adjust the size so it remained legible without overwhelming the layout.

Merpati for Boutique Online Store Banners

Next, I used Merpati for a boutique online store selling handmade jewelry. The brand needed a font that reflected craftsmanship and individuality, and Merpati delivered exactly that. I placed it on a banner above the product grid, using alternate characters to create subtle variations in the headline text.

Since the store's audience is likely to be female and aged between 25–40, the font’s soft curves and hand-drawn appeal resonated well with their visual expectations. I paired Merpati with a clean sans serif font for body copy to maintain contrast and ensure readability across different screen sizes. This combination helped guide the user's eye from the bold title to the detailed product descriptions below.

Merpati in a Coaching Website Call-to-Action Section

For a coaching website focused on life transformation, I experimented with Merpati in the call-to-action section. The goal was to create a sense of urgency and personal connection, and the handwritten nature of Merpati helped achieve that. I used it for the main CTA button label, "Start Your Journey," and found that it stood out against a dark background without being too busy.

The font’s swash characters added a touch of elegance, making the button feel more like an invitation than a standard link. However, I kept the rest of the page in a minimalist style to avoid clutter. This balance helped maintain a polished look while still feeling approachable and authentic.

Merpati for Blog Headers and Article Titles

On a blog redesign project, I tested Merpati for article titles and headers. The blog covered topics like wellness, productivity, and self-care, and the font’s warm, expressive style aligned well with the content’s tone. I used it sparingly—mainly for headlines and subheadings—to avoid overwhelming the reader.

One thing I noticed was how Merpati influenced scanning behavior. Readers were more inclined to read through longer sections when the headings were styled with a handwritten script. It also helped establish a consistent brand voice across the site, reinforcing the blog’s identity as a space for thoughtful, human-centered content.

Merpati in a Digital Brand Kit for a New Startup

When creating a digital brand kit for a new startup, I included Merpati as the primary font for all branded materials. From email headers to social media graphics, the font provided a cohesive visual thread that reinforced the brand’s personality. Its versatility allowed it to work across multiple platforms, including websites, print, and digital ads.

I made sure to test Merpati in various contexts, such as logo text, taglines, and promotional banners. In each case, it brought a unique charm that set the brand apart from competitors. The inclusion of many alternate characters gave me flexibility in designing custom assets, which was especially useful for creating unique marketing collateral.

Merpati for Course Sales Pages and Landing Pages

In a course sales page, Merpati played a subtle but effective role. I used it for the main headline, “Unlock Your Creativity,” and paired it with a modern sans serif font for the supporting text. The contrast helped draw attention to the core message while maintaining a clean, easy-to-read layout.

For landing pages, I found that Merpati worked best for short, impactful phrases rather than long paragraphs. It added a personal touch that made the page feel more inviting and trustworthy. I also considered performance, ensuring that the font loaded quickly and rendered consistently across browsers and devices.

Merpati in Responsive Layouts and Mobile Optimization

As part of the responsive design process, I evaluated how Merpati performed on smaller screens. While the font looked great on desktop, I had to adjust the line spacing and letter spacing to ensure it remained readable on mobile. I also avoided using it for small buttons or dense text blocks, where it could become difficult to parse.

Using a font like Merpati requires careful consideration of typography hierarchy. I always recommended pairing it with a simpler base font for body text, ensuring that the overall design remained accessible and user-friendly. This approach helped maintain a balance between creativity and usability, which is essential for any web project.

Merpati for Campaign Pages and Promotional Content

Finally, I used Merpati for a campaign page promoting a limited-time offer. The font’s playful yet refined look helped create excitement around the promotion. I incorporated it into the headline, pricing section, and countdown timer, ensuring that every element contributed to a cohesive and compelling message.

The PUA encoding feature proved invaluable here, allowing me to customize specific characters to match the campaign’s theme. Whether it was adding flourishes to the word “Sale” or using alternate glyphs for the numbers, Merpati provided the flexibility needed to make the campaign stand out.
